Coldplay made me love Sex, Drugs, & Cocoa Puffs / New Music Friday: Gracie Abrams, King Krule & Fontaines D.C. / Chuck Klosterman quote

morning babble / Friday 06-21-24

DISCLAIMER:

This is the scribble that leads to the babble.

Sometimes, it gets tidied up; other times, not so much.

When all else fails: there’s video!

“Yellow” cut

I’ve never been much of a Coldplay fan, but Coldplay did make me love the writing of Chuck Klosterman. I can explain.

Morning Babble intro

Happy Weekend – it’s officially summer and how does it feel already? Let’s check with that kid in the backseat (clip) Yup – I fully agree. Wholeheartedly. Very Hot. BUT – cool things off and talk about Coldplay. Was that a good transition? (“This is crazy” clip)

Alright – I didn’t think it was that bad – Coldplay – obviously, they are an extremely successful band, so for me to state not being a fan . . . I don’t believe hurts them at all and I’m certainly not out to get them or anything either (Clocks clip). See – I keep playing songs from them. In fact, I totally dig the piano that Chris Martin performs on during their concerts and shows (clips). It’s the music that I’m just not going to crank up and rock out to. I realize that it’s not “junk” but quality music and very well done, – just not my taste. (Tom Hanks with food) BUT – you know who else shares my feelings towards Coldplay music – Chuck Klosterman (show book stack). There’s no Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs book because I let someone borrow that book and haven’t gotten it back yet. We’ll show a clip of the book cover (clip) – very poplular book from 2003. There’s a particular essay in it called “This is Emo”. Basically, Chuck got mad because a girl he liked chose NOT to be with him but instead flew off to Portland instead to see the first US appearance by Coldplay – “a British pop group whose success derives from their ability to write melodramatic alt-rock songs about fake love.” The next line is the craziest, but also filled with creative profanity that I can’t really say here. My daughter sometimes watches. I will provide a link though! But – ever since that essay – I was all in on Klosterman. I think I excidely stated in bed – I love this guy.

New Music Friday:

I put together a Spotify playlist of the songs that I talked about and thought about today for New Music Friday. Click here for that!

  • Alright – let’s get this one out of the way – Coldplay – heard of them? (Travolta lost clip) They are releasing a new album, Moon Music, on October 4th. After all the success of their most recent album from 2021 – Music of the Spheres – if it’s not broke . . . why not go back to the very same producer again, Max Martin – so they did. Today, we’ve got the LP’s first single and it’s – imagine that as Klosterman stated “an alt-rock song about fake love” – this one is grouped together as one big word but still says “Feelslikeimfallinginlove.” (clip)
  • Couple months ago, we got the first glimpse of the new album coming from Fontaines D.C. as they gave us the album’s track #2 song – “Starburster” (clip) As August 23rd creeps closer and closer – that’s the drop date for the band’s fourth album called Romance. It’s about that time to get another tune. Today, it’s track #11 on the album called “Favourite” (clip)
  • J.J. Abrams has done a lot of television shows and movies (Solo “we’re home” clip) I still get chills from that scene. Anyway besides the Hollywood stuff, he had several kids, too – one who goes by the name of Gracie (“Block Me Out” clip) Past couple months, we got to hear a couple singles from her called “Close to You” and “Risk” (“Risk” clip). Today though – we have the entire album which is called – The Secret of Us – 13 tracks. 13 – that’s a good number especially for who joined her on the song currently being pushed on Spotify. This is “us” from Gracie Abrams and Taylor Swift (clip)
  • Several quick hits of new music: Post Malone released another new song from his upcoming country music album called F-1 Trillion – release date is August 16th. Teamed up with Blake Shelton for: “Pour Me a Drink” – that sounds like a good idea // Ice Spice has revealed that her upcoming album release date of Y2K will be Friday, July 26th. By the way, it’s called Y2K because January 1st 2000, the date of Y2K is her birthday. She just released a new song called “Phat Butt” // King Krule released a surprise new EP called: Shhhhhhh! (there are 7 h’s). The song that had a video made for it was “Time for Slurp” (clip)

Thank you to Spotify, Rolling Stone, Apple Music, uDiscoverMusic, Pigeons & Planes, Pitchfork, Louder, Spill Magazine, Dan Deluca of the Philly Inquirer & I know there’s more.

Be sure to check out the playlist on Spotify. As I mentioned in the beginning, it’s a playlist of songs that I’ve talked about and thought about: so, you’ll see some other new music there and anything that I really messed up and missed – well, that’s why I’ll be doing Missed Music Monday on Monday.

Please subscribe on YouTube and spread the Babble wherever you can – Thank you!
