(New Music Weekend Intro)

Happy Holiday Weekend – for some people. Others, all good. You’re saving money and don’t have to purchase all those eggs to decorate.

(Gene Autry – “Peter Cottontail”)

I prefer Gene Autry and his Rudolph song. FYI – that is 1 of 37 “Classic” Easter songs available on a Spotify playlist. I’ll provide a link. Who’s coming up! The always prolific King Gizzard, The National’s lead guy doing his solo thing, new Sublime, and Petey USA!

New Music Weekend:

  • Over the years, The National’s Matt Berninger has shared the microphone with various female voices: Caroline Spence, Phoebe Bridgers (clip), Julia Stone, Taylor Swift (clip) and now for the 2nd release off his upcoming album, we get the sole member of Hand Habits – Meg Duffy joining him (clip) That’s “Breaking into Acting” off the Get Sunk album which is dropping in its entirety on May 30th. Here’s a refresher, Matt Berninger’s 1st release of this new album was “Bonnet of Pins” (clip)
  • With King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, I’m a rookie Gizzhead – in fact, I probably don’t have any right in calling myself that quite yet. BUT – I do have two of their vinyls. Baby steps (“Alluda Majaka”) Oddments was my first vinyl purchase of theirs – older album from 2014, but a recent purchase for me. Another King Gizzard vinyl I picked up Sketches of Brunswick East (clip) I received help with choosing that one from Austen at my local shop – Rainbow Records. Anyway – why all this King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard talk – they have announced a release date for their upcoming album. (“Phantom Island”) Phantom Island is due out June 13th – the band’s 27th album – quite prolific those Aussies. Recently, they shared the record’s title track, but now we have the follow up and Track #2 on the album called “Deadstick” (clip)
  • I just talked about this possiblity last Sunday – new music from Sublime (clip) In celebration of the 20th anniversary of Look At All The Love We Found: A Tribute to Sublime, there is an expanded edition of the compilation arriving May 9th from Sublime (clip) This edition includes brand spanking new recordings from Pennywise, Zac Brown Band, Slightly Stoopid, Jack Johnson, and Fishbone. I don’t have any samples of those new songs. BUT – we do have the son of the late Bradley Nowell – Jakob Nowell offering up his solo project Jakobs Castle version of “Garden Grove” (clip)
  • Several quick hits of new music: One of the most anticipated albums of the year – Send A Prayer from Julien Baker & TORRES is out. They gone country and if you felt optimistic about the first couple releases, this album will NOT let you down // Big Thief’s Adrianne Lenker has announced a new live album. 43-tracks that were recorded over three nights during the tour of her 2024 solo album, Bright Future. Also, there are live renditions of five previously unreleased songs. Live at Revolution Hall is out April 24 – that’s soon. // This one actually came out back on March 28th, but personally, I just heard it. Could be a “Missed Music Monday”. (clip) Petey USA is someone who I watched numerous funny videos of and had no idea he did music. His new album THE YIPS comes out July 11th, but for the time being we can enjoy its 1st release called “The Milkman” (clip)

Thank you to Spotify, Rolling Stone, Apple Music, uDiscoverMusic, Pigeons & Planes, Pitchfork, Louder, Spill Magazine, Dan Deluca of the Philly Inquirer & I know there’s more.

I put together a Spotify playlist of the songs that I talked about and thought about today for New Music Friday. Click here for that! Anything that I really messed up and missed – well, that’s why I’ll be doing Missed Music Monday on Monday.
