morning babble / Friday 10-25-24

DISCLAIMER:

This is the scribble that leads to the babble.

Sometimes, it gets tidied up; other times, not so much.

When all else fails: there’s video!

(Happy Birthday Song)

Guess who just turned 20 – not me, that’s impossible – but this album did

(“American Idiot”)

(Morning Babble Intro)

Happy Weekend – next Friday – it’s November. Before you know it, we’ll be seeing Tom the Turkey (clip) Leading off every Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade – Tom the Turkey. Someone actually wrote a song about that turkey (clip) That is so uncomfortable. I’m going to shift this conversation back to other music. (Holiday clip) Ahhhhh – Green Day. That’s their seventh studio album – American Idiot – which was originally released back in September of 2004 (“Wake Me Up When September Ends”) So that’s 20 September endings. The deluxe vinyl box basically costs $200 but it features the eight LPs pressed on different color vinyl, plus a 36-page book, a large Green Day flag, and the iconic American Idiot red tie.

New Music Friday:

I put together a Spotify playlist of the songs that I talked about and thought about today for New Music Friday. Click here for that!

  • 1st up – she played Harley Quinn (“Bad Romance” clip) After the release of Harlequin, the companion album to the Joker sequel, we do have even more music from Lady Gaga (“Disease” clip) I’m enjoying the beats and the grungy guitar sounds coming from that song called “Disease.” (another clip) It’s officially the lead single off of her upcoming album due out in February of 2025 – it’s known amongst her fans and Gaga herself as LG7.
  • (“Sidecar” clip) Back at the end of July, Big B released his album – Wellness Check (Jim Carrey clip) It was good. On that album was a song done with Killer Mike who I’m a big fan of – ‘Loud-mouthed chubby kid, confident as can be / I like BB guns, go-karts, and RUN DMC.’ Just saying it, not rapping it. (“Pretend” clip) There’s an updated version of “Pretend” – this time around – it’s still has Big B & Killer Mike, but now it also has the added sound of Jakob Nowell and Little Stranger. (another “Pretend” clip)
  • After a year and a half of thinking, writing and recording, Soccer Mommy has given us her 4th studio album – Evergreen (“Lost” cut) That was the first release from early Summer and it’s track #1 on this album called “Lost”. Ironically enough, it was also the last song she wrote for the record. (“Abigail”) Today, the single being highlighted is “Abigail.” 11 songs in all to enjoy from Sophia Regina Allison aka Soccer Mommy.
  • (“Dreams” Fleetwood Mac) Halsey has a new album out but that wasn’t it. That was Fleetwood Mac. Here’s Halsey (“Panic Attack”) This is all done on purpose. Transcending the sound of the 70s, that song is “Panic Attack” and the one being pushed on Spotify right now. But – Halsey has confirmed that this new album will travel over different decades and musical styles (“Ego” clip) And that’s the 90s with the song “Ego” – there are 18 songs in all which adds up to over an hour of new music – album is called The Great Impersonator. You even get a song like “Hometown” with a country feel. She did pose as Dolly to promote it though. (clip)
  • Several quick hits of new music: Cold War Kids went into the studio on September 30th. Today you can go hear that new song called “Meditations.” That’s less than a month – that’s pretty good turnaround // The Pixies have a new album. By the way, they are also sporting a new line-up that includes bassist and back-up singer, Emma Richardson, formerly of Band of Skulls. New album is called The Night the Zombies Came // The National have released even more songs off their upcoming live album called Rome aka an ideal vinyl Christmas gift for Brent (kid looking) That album comes out December 13th. Speaking of Christmas // More holiday music. Ben Folds (clip) Yeah, that Ben Folds has a full blown Christmas album out called Sleigher. 10 tracks in all – 7 original holiday songs and 3 covers. Here’s one of those covers from Burt Bacharach: “The Bell That Couldn’t Jingle” (clip)

Thank you to Spotify, Rolling Stone, Apple Music, uDiscoverMusic, Pigeons & Planes, Pitchfork, Louder, Spill Magazine, Dan Deluca of the Philly Inquirer & I know there’s more.

Be sure to check out the playlist on Spotify. As I mentioned in the beginning, it’s a playlist of songs that I’ve talked about and thought about: so, you’ll see some new music there from Linkin Park, Black Pumas, Tyler the Creator, and anything that I really messed up and missed – well, that’s why I’ll be doing Missed Music Monday on Monday.

Please subscribe on YouTube and spread the Babble wherever you can – Thank you!
