Do I see a Christmas Tree lit up? / New Music Friday: King Gizzard, Black Keys, Beck, GRAHAM, & Henrik

morning babble / Friday 11-01-24

DISCLAIMER:

This is the scribble that leads to the babble.

Sometimes, it gets tidied up; other times, not so much.

When all else fails: there’s video!

(Will Ferrell clip)

It’s November and I play a Will Ferrell clip that’s NOT from Elf

(“Shocking”)

Snuck that in there. Who’s got their Christmas tree up already?

(Will Ferrell clip)

(Morning Babble Intro)

Happy November Weekend! I promise to limit the Christmas chat – don’t worry. BUT, I have to admit during trick or treating with my daughter, there was one house – two Christmas trees and a wreath already on the door. They weren’t answering but they did have a big old bowl of candy out front for all the kids and NO – there weren’t any candy canes to be taken.

New Music Friday:

I put together a Spotify playlist of the songs that I talked about and thought about today for New Music Friday. Click here for that!

  • Kicking off November’s new music King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard – that’s fun to say (Francisco clip) I hadn’t really followed this band. But – it’s a favorite of Austin’s who’s from Rainbow Records in Newark, DE. When someone has a favorite, I enjoying digging in to find out why. This band has a plethora of albums to choose from. (“Alluda Majaka”) Track #1 of the Oddments album from 2014. This album sorta reminded me a lot of Beck and his Midnite Vultures album from 1999 (“Mixed Bizness”) I know – new music – where is it? Again, the band – King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard – released back in August the album Flight B741 (clip) Stu Mackenzie of the band said “So our last album was 10 songs. Except we recorded 20 in that session.” I’m not sure if a companion album is coming but one of those extra songs was released called “Phantom Island” (clip)
  • Coming out in two weeks on November 15th, The Black Keys have an expanded version of their Ohio Players album. They’re calling it The Trophy Edition (clip)  I’m seeing this more and more. Bands release an album than months later or in some cases a year (blink-182 clip), these deluxe editions comes out with these extra songs. Or – a companion albumn. I just mentioned King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard but that’s what The National did last year with these two albums (clip) I did a tangent again, didn’t I. I was talking about The Black Keys – this deluxe album has 4 new songs. 2 we got last month. Today, we a third. Yup – that means only 1 more new one to hear on the 15th. In the meantime, let’s enjoy this 3rd one called “I’m With The Band” AND it features vocals from Beck (clip)
  • This past August, I talked about the guy who lists “South Jersey Music” on his Instagram account (“Wishing Well”) The song is “Wishing Well” and the guy is Henrik and again that was August. Since then, Henrik teamed up with GRAHAM to release 4 singles together (“Call My Name”) That song got a lot of play on Spotify – “Call My Name.” Now, these 4 combo releases were actually half of the album – Cedarcliff. So, today, since we now can hear the whole album, we get the other 4 singles. I’ve actually been enjoying the final track called “Remember” and remember this Henrik and GRAHAM (“Remember” clip)
  • I was going to put this one in the quick hits of new music, but I found myself singing this one after I heard it a couple times. It’s a good pop sounding song. (clip) That’s “Crocodile Tears” from Lauren Mayberry who happens to also be the Chvrches’ lead singer. But this is off of her first solo album called Vicious Creature and due out December 6th //
  • Several quick hits of new music: For many, many years, it feels like Snoop Dogg has teased us with a Dr. Dre–produced album called Missionary. Well, it’s official now and will be arriving to us all before Santa does on December 13th. // Lead singer of TV on the Radio – Tunde Adebimpe (tune-day ah-da-bim-pay) signed with Sub Pop Record for his debut solo album which is due out in 2025 (that’s 2 months away). We get our 1st taste of the record with the song “Magnetic” //Xmas// 54 years ago, the Carpenters gave us “Merry Christmas Darling” (clip) Today, there is a new collection featuring 16 holiday classics from the Carpenters – it’s all packaged nicely under the title: Christmas Once More (clip)

Thank you to Spotify, Rolling Stone, Apple Music, uDiscoverMusic, Pigeons & Planes, Pitchfork, Louder, Spill Magazine, Dan Deluca of the Philly Inquirer & I know there’s more.

Be sure to check out the playlist on Spotify. As I mentioned in the beginning, it’s a playlist of songs that I’ve talked about and thought about: so, you’ll see some new music there from Maggie Rogers, Fuller, Andrew Bird, and anything that I really messed up and missed – well, that’s why I’ll be doing Missed Music Monday on Monday.

Please subscribe on YouTube and spread the Babble wherever you can – Thank you!
