morning babble: Setting some goals and hitting them OR . . . folding clothes? / Marcus Aurelius quote

Happy Monday! Push it through and make it that – a happy day.

I already Jiu-Jitsu’d today. A little bit of a struggle this morning though. I ran twice this weekend. First time – on the mill. Second time – outside. Plantar Fasciitis – still there.

I will be running with the team from my kid’s old school – NCCL – in the Faithful Friends 5k Run at Bellevue State Park this Sunday, September 25th.

GOAL SETTING MONDAY & REVIEW –

Learned from Derek Sivers

Two ways of setting goals for yourself

  1. Driven by dissatisfaction – raise the bar / Accept the dissatisfaction until the goal is hit
  2. Or lower the bar to feel satisfaction throughout until you hit the overall goal

Struggling to get something done . . . if you’re at home, this is easy. Fold clothes and put them away. A sense of accomplishment will be achieved and will help propel you onto the next task. Put dishes away that are now clean from the overnight dishwasher cleaning.

morning babble: Keeping it real for New Music Friday: Death Cab, Blackpink, & Kenny Wayne Shepherd

morning babble / Friday 09-16-22

This is the scribble that leads to the babble. Sometimes, it gets tidied up; but other times, not so much. When all else fails: watch the video!

My first win of the day – I didn’t hit snooze to begin. I fought it and stood up. I didn’t really want to begin today. Why? Well, minutes before my 3-Day fast was about to end, over a glorious dinner of chicken fajitas and the beverage of beer, I was notified that my employee was calling out for today and that threw me back on the road. That was a punch. I had to miss jiu-jitsu because of the early start. A whole lot of work has now been pushed to the weekend, which is never fun.

So, how am I going to get out of this? I didn’t hit snooze – that was my first win. Next, I already checked on my family and I’m so fortunate to have them here for me. And finally, music. Lots of music.

Let’s go!

New Music Friday:

I put together a Spotify playlist of the songs that I talked about and thought about today for New Music Friday. Click here for that!

  • Death Cab for Cutie – the band’s 10th album – Asphalt Meadows has fully dropped. Little over 40 minutes of new music spread out over 11 songs. This is going to be a good album for me to catch up on today. I need some of that chill sound adding to my day’s thoughts.
  • This was a pleasant surprise today – Father John Misty revealed a new Live at Electric Lady EP. It’s a Spotify exclusive recorded at Jimi Hendrix’s famous New York City studio. With this EP, you get five songs from his most recent album Chloë and the Next 20th Century, as well as a cover of Stevie Wonder’s “I Believe (When I Fall In Love It Will Be Forever).” That Chloe album has never seen the record cabinet for me. It stays out, so I can keep playing it.
  • A big album that dropped today that I have to mention is the one from the reigning queen of K-pop: Blackpink. Their album Born Pink is out – only 8 songs. Don’t blink – it’s all over in 25 minutes. Not necessarily my flavor for sound, I can still tell good pop-sounding music. Oh – and this might be it – like the END for Blackpink. Solo albums apparently are in the future for the foursome.
  • Alright this confused the junk out of me today. Kenny Wayne Shepherd – amazing guitarist and sadly an artist I forget about at times, but should so go back and tap in to. Anyway, Spotify had listed under its new music the song “True Lies”. I listened and was like, I really like that but I thought he did that already. He did. It’s off his album, “True Lies . . . “. He’s touring celebrating the 25th anniversary of this album. So, I believe this was a redone version of the song in order to simply draw attention to the album . . . again. I anticipate a 25th anniversary album or something, but sadly couldn’t find anything written up on it. I’ll reach out to his reps, maybe he needs Babble interview. Back in my radio days, I played songs from this album from my new music show “Breaking & Entering”. See Kenny – you and me are getting old together. I’ll celebrate that 25th with ya.

DAY 3 of the 3-DAY FAST

HAPPY FRIDAY EVE!

When you wake up on the 3rd day, your body initially is like “I think you forgot something these past couple days. Can’t quite put my finger on it . . . oh that’s right, food!”

Actually, it’s not that bad, but you do start the day slowly. Like really slow, but once you get going – the autophagy kicks in.

Day 2 of the 3-Day Fast

Toughest Day – No end in sight / Bring on 6:20PM tomorrow – Friday Eve

I’ll also be doing Jiujitsu today.

Last year, I did that 5K every day. There were some tough day 2s & 3s.

BUT – BJJ – that’s another creative. Pace myself.

There’s a guy there who is called Bacon.

That would be so uncomfortable if I began singing that to him.

Welcome to AMA Wednesday –

Via someone – “Why did you try fasting?”

Tim Ferriss did fasting and believes that it helped him overcome his Lyme Disease. I then heard and further read how it is benefiting at preventing cancer. Finally, I learned how doing a 3-Day Fast resets your system which is beneficial in beating allergies that you may have. Gives your body another chance at winning during the allergy season. Now, I still need to take some medication, but it is considerably less than anything that I had to do before.

Also, helps keep me in line for my jiujitsu weight.

1st Day of the 3-Day Fast has begun – last night, it officially started at 6:20pm, after pasta, hot sausage, red wine, and closed it out with pumpkin spice Oreos.

Autophagy is Latin for “self eating”

This is when your body consumes old cells for energy when you fast. This can: ease pain, reduce loose skin, lower inflammation.

Research suggests it can even help prevent cancer.

Autophagy begins when fasting for at least 18 hours, sometimes up to 20 hours.

Autophagy peaks around 32 to 48 hours of fasting

PODCAST TUESDAY!

So, I tried listening to some fasting podcasts and that was a whole lot tougher than I thought it would be.

Dr. Anthony Gustin has a podcast called: The Natural State. I do like him – he’s got good things. He had on his podcast – Dave Asprey, who has done all kinds of fasting. I really did enjoy this one. Click here for that podcast.

Dave Asprey / Chris Collinsworth – look alike?

Happy Monday – no case of the Mondays – let’s make it a happy one.

I had a good weekend. Didn’t hit some goals but it was definitely a good weekend.

I had a lot on the plate. My eyes were definitely bigger than the stomach.

GOAL SETTING MONDAY

Need to just get it back into gear. Smile at that good weekend, but I still realize that not too many of the initial goals that I wanted to accomplish were made. AND – that’s okay.

I need to remember the good things.

I ran a 5k yesterday – getting ready for that Faithful Friends 5k on Sunday the 25th.

New Music Friday:

I put together a Spotify playlist of the songs that I talked about and thought about today for New Music Friday. Click here for that!

  • Prince of Darkness is back. That’s Ozzy Osbourne. Actually, to promote his new album which is out in its fullness today called Patient Number 9 – last night, he was performing during halftime of the NFL’s season opening game between the Los Angeles Rams and Buffalo Bills. It was to be a two-song set and was, but after NBC introduced the act, they only showed 10 seconds of Ozzy, who by the way, is 73. He looked propped up. Anyway – new music and the album includes Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Zakk Wylde, Pearl Jam’s Mike McCready, RHCP’s Chad Smith, and the late Taylor Hawkins.
  • Via Yahoo Entertainment, “Aqua Teen Hunger Force returns this November with the movie Aqua Teen Forever: Plantasm, and Run the Jewels contributed the opening theme to the film with the appropriately titled “Opening Theme.” Supersized fry – that’s a funny line. However, I have to claim my ignorance to this movie. I am not familiar with it or what it’s all about it. BUT – they got my attention by getting Run the Jewels involved. Here’s a link to go see the trailer for Aqua Teen Forever: Plantasm. Oh and Run the Jewels – apparently, they are going back into the studio for another LP – yesssssssssssssssssssssssss.
  • New John Legend album is out and called LEGEND and it’s a double album. 24 songs / Nearly an hour and a half of new music. I read an article today from Tim Peacock on uDiscover Music and he broke it down the best: “ACT I recalls vividly the worldly, sensual pleasures of Saturday night – full of lust, self, sex and adventure.” Then, “ACT II evokes the feeling of a Sunday morning, with its focus on healing, intimacy, soulfulness and commitment.” We’ve already gotten a couple singles out of this new album, but Mr. Legend is slotted to sing “Pieces” at the 74th Emmy Awards on September 12 (Monday).
  • Country Music star Kane Brown has his 3rd album out today in its entirety. It’s called Different Man – 17 songs, hour of music. If you know me, I’m not the biggest fan of the country sound, at times, I’d much rather shove a pencil in my ear. BUT -this guy has blended the sound of soul & hip-hop into country. It really is something special. The album does include his first recorded collaboration with his wife Katelyn Brown – called “Thank God.”

Welcome to AMA Wednesday –

Via someone – “Didn’t you have a doctor’s appointment? How’s the Plantar Fasciitis?”

My doctor didn’t help me all that much. I basically explained how I hadn’t run since June 5th but then just started back up and the foot really wasn’t getting any worse. He said that I appeared to have it under control and to maybe using a heating pad for it. I used this heating corn bag that I warm up in the microwave. I mean – maybe he’s helping me? No cortisone shot, but I have been doing the warm bag treatment.

PODCAST TUESDAY!

Peter Attia has a podcast called: the drive. The most recent episode that came out just yesterday is called “Understanding sleep and how to improve it.” Click here.

Over the years, Peter Attia has had Matthew Walker (Why We Sleep) on his podcast for 3 episodes. All of those are good, but this is like a highlight reel for them.

Time spent in bed has been my focus but they were saying that’s a good start but you really need to get that full 8 hours of actual sleep. I struggle there big time, but I’m trying. Currently, my watch tells me that I’m getting on average 6 hours, 12 minutes / 5 hours, 46 minutes, and 6 hours, 4 minutes.

Talk about naps / If you are struggling with sleeping at night – avoid naps. You want that sleep pressure build-up

If you’ve been trying to get to sleep and have been in bed for 20 minutes – get out of bed. Go read in the library. Get sleepy and then get back into bed. Train yourself that bed is a time for sleep.

The bed is for two things: Sleeping & Tickle Fights
