“Just a Girl” is all grown up now — she just turned 30!
Actually, the whole album, Tragic Kingdom, dropped on this day back in 1995.

The album sold an amazing 10 million copies in America and launched Gwen Stefani into stardom. But here’s the thing — that success wasn’t guaranteed. At one point, their record label literally told them, “Go back to your garage and write music.”

That’s some good garage music. You see – instead of allowing the rejection to end it all right there, they used it as fuel. They practiced, experimented, and kept pushing until they cracked the code.

And honestly, that’s what my 5K Every Day is all about — showing up, learning from mistakes, and figuring out what works through consistency.

And yes… I ran again today.

Today – back in 2007, Josh Groban released his Christmas album – Noël

It then went on to be the top-selling album of 2007 and one of the best-selling Christmas albums of all time. Don’t shoot the messenger but Christmas is only 77 days away.

Here’s the thing — the Noël album didn’t happen overnight.
The effort you put in now — the things you do consistently, day in and day out — might not seem like much today…
but they build into something big over time.

Groban’s steady grind — just like my daily miles — is about carrying that weight, step after step, until you finally get to Christmas morning . . . or for my 5K Every Day goal –
January 1st 2026.

40 years ago today, Peter Gene Hernandez was born in Honolulu, Hawaii. As a toddler, his father thought that Peter was a little chunky and resembled a famous wrestler, whose first name was Bruno. That nickname stuck.

The “Mars” part came later, when Peter dropped his surname Hernandez to avoid being typecast by record labels. He reinvented himself to create opportunity.

And he didn’t just sit around waiting for fame.
Bruno Mars worked for it. He practiced every day until his moment came.
That kind of daily grind? Yeah… kinda like running a 5K every day.

On this date back in 1986, The Police released their final single, “Don’t Stand So Close To Me ’86,” and then officially called it a career.

They just didn’t want to stand so close to one another anymore – there were hopes of another album, but personal and creative conflict did not allow them to reunite.

The Police couldn’t stand the necessary friction, but for a challenge like 5K Every Day, you have to embrace it. Lean into the tension. Every day. Let’s play a happier song:

On this date back in 2016, the 65,000 square-foot estate in Minnesota where Prince lived and worked was officially opened up to the public.

Prince originally built up this area – Paisley Park – in the mid-’80s and used it as his recording studio, concert venue, and production office. Today, there’s a guided tour that includes a look at his studios, editing suites, soundstage and NPG Music Club. You can also take a peek at an urn in the atrium that holds his ashes

That’s the lesson for us today: Don’t just show up for one part of the challenge. Build the whole system that supports your goal—your routine, your habits, your self-talk. Be the comprehensive creator of your own life.

I might not have a massive complex or an urn for my ashes yet, but I did run today.

New Music Weekend / 10/03-10/05/25

Happy Weekend! This one has been circled on the calendar for quite some time with the ladies of my household.

Who’s coming up for New Music Weekend – it’s a tough one for some of these bands, we’ve got The Moss, Snooper, Good Neighbors, and by law I have to do it, but I was looking forward to it as well – Taylor Swift.

New Music Weekend:

• Jack White signed this band to his Third Man Records Label (“Pom Pom” clip) Nashville’s Snooper is a modern egg punk band, known for their kinetic live shows featuring puppets and papier-mâché (“Guard Dog” clip) The new album – Worldwide – is a breathless, adrenline rush, with most tracks clocking in at under two minutes. 12 tracks in under a half hour! A song that just came out with a video is going to give some of us flashbacks to the 90s – “Star 6 9” (“Star 6 9” clip) I so remember my house phone ringing as a kid and not getting to it in time and then . . . star 6 9. One more song from Snooper. It’s a high-speed opening track on Worldwide – it starts the madness. Here’s “Opt Out” (“Opt Out” clip)

• Back in March, I talked about Good Neighbours and hearing on the radio their song “Ripple” (“Ripple” clip) Good song about being there for your friends. Now while touring with Foster the People earlier this year, they then road tested another new song “Starry Eyed” (clip) Today, the entire album can be heard – it’s called Blue Sky Mentality and, of course, has the song that hat broke the duo globally – “Home” (“Home” clip) I’m going to go a little deeper for you on the album to a song that shifts away their signature upbeat style to a slower, more deliberate tone. It’s track #14 – the album’s closer called “The Buzz” (“The Buzz” clip)

• And now by law, a review of – The Life of a Showgirl (“The Life of a Showgirl” clip) For those of you who question whether a 52 year old – old dude has any right reviewing this album. Let me just say – I have 10 year old daughter and that album has been playing non-stop. AND – I went to see the a 90-minute movie to celebrate the release of Taylor’s 12th album (“The Fate of Ophelia” clip) The focus of the movie surrounded the new video for “The Fate of Ophelia” as well as the behind the scenes making of the video – I thoroughly enjoyed it. And – I loved witnessing the excitement of Taylor Swift during her creativity process – very well done. More artists need to pay attention and do this for their fans. (“Opalite”) and that song “Opalite” – I believe – is going to be huge. I find myself wanting to hear it again and again. And – you know who else is a fan of it Travis Kelce. Let’s play a little more (“Opalite”)

• Several quick hits of new music: The Moss – I fell for this band with the song “The Place That Makes Me Happy” (“The Place That Makes Me Happy” clip) It’s not a full blast album, but instead a quiant 4 pack EP of musical joy called: Free Ride // 5 albums that were bold enough to arrive on a Taylor Swift weekend: Malibu, Carter Faith, Pavlov’s Dog, Ledisi, and Mayday Parade // Daisy Grenade is a band that I always look forward to hearing their new music arrivals. However, let’s revisit an older favorite real quick (“How To Hide a Body”) “How To Hide A Body” – setting the mood for Halloween times. Anyway – they have a new song out called “Good Luck (Wish You Hell)” (clip)

Taylor’s fiancé, of course, is Travis Kelce who’s 36th birthday it is today. AND – the October birthstone is the Opal. FYI – I’m a bigger fan of his brother.

Jason Kelce who built his career as an underdog. He was a walk-on and constantly told he wasn’t big enough—but yet he retired as a Super Bowl champion and a legend.
