Did Hormones Make the Beastie Boys a Favorite? / New Music Friday: Daisy Grenade, Fcukers, Joey Valence & Brae

(“Brass Monkey” cut)

Back in high school for a football game pep rally, I remember the cheerleaders dancing to the “Brass Monkey” song. It was 1987 and due to my freshman horomones, I remember that scene quite vividly.

(“Brass Monkey” cut)

(Morning Babble Intro)

Happy Weekend! I’ve warned you in the past – anytime I get the chance to play a Beastie Boys song . . . I will. (clip) I definitely think my high school horomones might be the reason why Beastie Boys are locked in as one of my favorites. “Brass Monkey” was actually the 2nd release off their infamous album – Licensed to Ill (“The New Style” cut) “The New Style” was the first release back in 1986, then “Brass Monkey”, and finally “Fight for Your Right” (clip) I remember my parents not liking the fact how much I was enjoying that MTV video.

What did they say your mom threw away?

New Music Friday:

I put together a Spotify playlist of the songs that I talked about and thought about today for New Music Friday. Click here for that!

  • Let’s begin (“John Cena” clip) I’m embarassed to say that I’m late to the party on this one. It’s a sound that should have been on my rader since it’s similar to Limp Bizkit and one of my favorites – the Beastie Boys (clip of “Crank It Up”) “Crank It Up” is a song from 2021 via Joey Valence & Brae. Who are they (YouTube clip) Their sophomore album – No Hands – dropped this past June. Today though, we have a deluxe version of the album (clip) That’s the “badder” version of the song “The Baddest” but this time with Ayesha Erotica, which is one of the songs that can be found on the deluxe album. (clip) You also get the new song “Pineapple Fried Rice” along with the duo’s spin on Charli XCX’s BRAT summer hit “365” (clip)
  • I’ve been a fan of LYELL for several years now. (“Kiss Kiss Bang Bang”) and “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang” is one of my favorites from her. Although her cover of blink-182’s “I Miss You” is pretty damn good too (“I Miss You”) So, does LYELL have a new album out – nope. But – Robert DeLong does. Have I listened to him before? Nope. (“Favorite Color is Blue”) I’ve got to listen to some more. That clip was Robert DeLong singing with K. Flay (who I like alot) the song “Favorite Color is Blue” – that was from 2018 though. He does have a new album out called Playlist of Doom – 30 minutes of new music spread out over 10 songs. How does all of this relate to LYELL? She sings on one of those 10 songs called “2 of Us” (clip of “2 of Us”)
  • I really like the music of M.I.A. (M.I.A. “World Town”) Therefore, when I heard a song from this other band, I paused. (fcukers “UMPA”) “UMPA” is the name of the song and I can say that. I can say the name of the band, too, but I’ve kept this little video thing of mine clean for so long – I created a card (flash “fcukers”) Yes – it’s what you think it is. Local radio – gonna be a little tough on them. Anyway – a 6 pack of songs actually arrived last week, but I’ve been digging into their sound and thoroughly enjoy myself and (flash “fcukers”) (clip)
  • Several quick hits of new music: The Cure took to social media to announce their first new album in 16 years – called Songs of a Lost World and is should arriving 11/1. Lead singer, Robert Smith, claims that it’s “the best thing we’ve done” – then again, has anyone ever really come out and been like here’s another crappy album. // Teddy Swims released a new song called “Bad Dreams” (clip) 2024 has already been a big one for Teddy – looking forward to maybe even more than “Bad Dreams”? // I know it’s September, but the first Christmas song of the year arrived down the chimney from Amy Grant called “When I Think of Christmas” – it’s off of a compilation album along with Vince Gill. Don’t worry – I won’t play it, so Merry Christmas // Nirvana is one of my all-time favorites (“Polly” clip) So when another band covers one of their songs, I’m intrigued. I am not familiar with the band – Daisy Grenade. I am now and they’ve got my attention. Here’s their cover of Nirvana’s “Polly” (clip)

Thank you to Spotify, Rolling Stone, Apple Music, uDiscoverMusic, Pigeons & Planes, Pitchfork, Louder, Spill Magazine, Dan Deluca of the Philly Inquirer & I know there’s more.

Be sure to check out the playlist on Spotify. As I mentioned in the beginning, it’s a playlist of songs that I’ve talked about and thought about: so, you’ll see some new music there from Knox, Fuller, and Tate McCrae (clip) maybe that last one is a fun one to listen while watching – anything that I really messed up and missed – well, that’s why I’ll be doing Missed Music Monday on Monday.

What Death Cab For Cutie song do you hear with the song: “Bop Ba”? / Missed Music Monday with Valley

morning babble / Monday 09-09-24

DISCLAIMER:

This is the scribble that leads to the babble.

Sometimes, it gets tidied up; other times, not so much.

When all else fails: there’s video!

(“I didn’t even ask for this” cut)

Yes – the band is called Valley and they dropped a whole new album on August 30th

(Missed Music Monday opener)

Water the Flowers, Pray for a Garden is the name of the album from Valley. I realized I missed something when I heard a song of theirs played on AltNation’s Advanced Placement show.

(“Bop Ba”)

The show’s host Regan compared the song to something from Death Cab for Cutie

(“Sound of Settling”)

I can hear it, but the Valley still has their own sound. My favorite is track #2 ” A Little More”

Happy National Beer Lovers Day! Crack one open & listen to “Beercan” via Beck! / Quote of the Day from Benjamin Franklin (maybe)

Who else is back besides the glorious Pumpkin Spice Oreos? / New Music Friday with Weezer, Amy Allen, blink-182

morning babble / Friday 09-06-24

DISCLAIMER:

This is the scribble that leads to the babble.

When all else fails: there’s video!

(song)

They’re back – Pumpkin Spice Oreos.

Oh . . . and so is Linkin Park

(song)

(Morning Babble Intro)

Happy Weekend – is it Autumn yet? Not officially, but the more and more we get these pumpkin spice delicious delights, the more I feel the changing of the season.

(“Bleed it out” with Mike Shinoda)

That’s Mike Shinoda singing in Linkin Park.

(“Bleed it out” with Chester Bennington)

And singing there is Chester Bennington who we lost back in 2017.

So, if Linkin Park is back together, how are they are going to do this without Chester?

(“Jump Sit Stand March” clip)

That’s an AWOLNATION song called “Jump Sit Stand March” – who was the guest singer on that song? From Dead Sara, it was Emily Armstrong (further “Jump Sit Stand March” clip) I know I probably should have played a Dead Sara song, but I just really like that new release with her and AWOLNATION. Anyway – she being Emily Armstrong has officially joined Linkin Park. There’s also a new drummer – sorry Colin (that’s the drummer), but Armstrong being upfront with Shinoda – that’s definitely the bigger news from Linkin Park. (new song clip) That’s the new song – “The Emptiness Machine”. AND – I guess a whole new album called From Zero is already complete and arrives November 15th. So, they’re back – Linkin Park along with the Pumpkin Spice Oreos. Looky there – you got new music before the your new music.

New Music Friday:

I put together a Spotify playlist of the songs that I talked about and thought about today for New Music Friday. Click here for that!

  • First up from Weezer (cut of the “third practice” recording of “Undone – The Sweater Song”) that is so not new and what happened to that song? (another cut) Evidently that’s the “third practice” recording of the infamous Weezer song “Undone – The Sweater Song” – they got so much better at that tune (version we know) Weezer is celebrating their 30th anniversary of their self-titled debut album better known as “The Blue Album” (picture) Coming out on November 1st is a deluxe reissue of that album – 50 tracks with a ton of unreleased songs and as what we just witnessed one of the earliest known recordings of their sweater song (clip)
  • Wikipedia lists at the top of the page in parenthesis for Amy Allen – (songwriter) and she still very much is. In fact, she helped pen for Sabrina Carpenter, her recent hit songs: “Taste”, “Please Please Please”, and “Espresso”. (“Espresso” clip) BUT – I believe that they are going to elevate that to singer/songwriter as her new album just dropped (“Darkside” clip) That’s “Darkside” which was actually the 2nd release off the album – it’s the one that I really connected with. Yeah “Darkside” (Vader clip) When I hear Amy Allen, I sort of group her into the Grace VanderWaal and Phoebe Bridgers. It’s just a wonderful, relaxing sound – today we have all 12 new songs and the one being highlighted on Spotify is “Reason to Forgive” (clip)
  • Two bands – Judah & the Lion and blink-182 each came out with new albums recently. But – they still had some leftover from the recording sessions and have now released deluxe versions of the those very albums (“What A Time To Be Alive”) That’s “What A Time To Be Alive” – just 1 of 5 new tracks from the deluxe version of their fifth studio album: The Process – that’s from the Nashville duo – Judah & the Lion. As for blink (clip) Their deluxe album isn’t called simply labeled deluxe. Instead, they added Part 2 to the title of One More Time (clip) With this new album from Travis, Mark, and Tom, you get 8 new tracks. The one being pushed by Spotify for blink-182 appears to be the song “Take Me In” (clip)
  • Several quick hits of new music: The Weeknd’s new album will be titled Hurry Up Tomorrow when’s it coming, he doesn’t know yet – that’s a good title. BUT – it will serve as the final installment of the Weeknd’s current musical trilogy, following 2020’s After Hours and 2022’s Dawn FM. // Lady Gaga plans to release her long-awaited seventh album at some point in February of 2025. BUT – we should a new song from it next month. As for the title of the album, it’s known amongst her fans and Gaga herself as LG7, // Let’s talk about an album that’s already out – in actuality, it came out last month aka one week ago. So, yes – I missed this one and it’s a big one to miss – Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds released Wild God.

Thank you to Spotify, Rolling Stone, Apple Music, uDiscoverMusic, Pigeons & Planes, Pitchfork, Louder, Spill Magazine, Dan Deluca of the Philly Inquirer & I know there’s more.

Happy Friday Eve!

September 5th is . . . well, it’s buddy’s birthday, Happy Birthday, Joe.

BUT – it’s also the birthday of Freddie Mercury.

(Cut of “Archbishop Harold Holmes”)

Happy Tuesday! So, close to Friday Eve already! I think that’s the only good thing about Monday holidays. Get back to work and you’re like “Yeah – it’s almost the weekend – sorta.”

I’m extra happy today because yesterday I picked up from my favorite record store – Rainbow Records in Newark, DE – the new Jack White album. It’s beautiful.

When all else fails: there’s video!

Happy Labor Day! Let’s go see what I missed on Friday.

(Missed Music Monday opener)

renforshort did a cover of the Gorillaz song “Feel Good Inc”

(clip)

I missed that one which was done all the way back in 2020. Hence, it’s not surprising that I missed this new one from a couple Fridays ago called “buried alive, again”

(clip)

renforshort teamed up with wrabel for that song – it’s a pretty song. I don’t say that much. Go enjoy some bar-b-que today!

Here’s an oldie but goodie debate – who do you like more – Oasis: (beginning bars of “Wonderwall”)

or Blur (begin bars of “Song 2”)

Again, it’s Oasis (clip) or Blur (clip) Let the debating commence!

(Morning Babble Intro)

Happy Labor Weekend – go squeeze out all the summer you can. I’m just gonna sit here and enjoy my Pumnkin Ale from Dogfish Head.

(“Live Forever” cut)

Big news in the music world dropped this past week. The Gallagher Brothers have kissed and made up, so they can get paid lots of money as they tour together as their former dynamic duo name of Oasis. Tour is next year – that’s a lot of time. What’s the first word of this song?

(“Live Forever” cut)

That’s right, maybe as in “maybe it will happen.” I think it will. So much money involved – how could it not. Personally, I want them to push iall the chips in and do another album. Until they do, I challenge Oasis to it by stating I believe Blur is still better because they keep making the albums. (“Countryhouse”)

New Music Friday:

I put together a Spotify playlist of the songs that I talked about and thought about today for New Music Friday. Click here for that!

  • First up – have you heard of Aaron Bruno? (A-A-RON clip) How about AWOLNATION? (clip) That’s a classic from 2010 called “Sail”. I love that part about ADD (clip) But that’s old AWOLNATION. Today we have a whole bunch of new AWOLNATION (“Party People” clip) Like that song called “Party People” – 10 songs are all nicely packaged together under the title of The Phantom Five. (“I Am Happy” clip) 3 songs were previously released and that one there was definitely my favorite favorites called “I Am Happy” – guesting on the song is Del The Funky Homosapien who happens to do one of my favorite raps on the Gorillaz song “Clint Eastwood” (“Clint Eastwood” clip) Back to AWOLNATION and The Phantom Five – it’s a great listen from beginning to end. I’ve done it a couple times already. Song being pushed by AWOLNATION since a new video for it has been released is the song “Barbarian” (clip)
  • Last August, we received our first taste of new Big Sean music within a trailer for the video game NBA 2K24 (“Precision” in NBA game) The song was officially released this past March as the lead single of his sixth studio album, Better Me Than You. (“Precision”) Via social media, Sean described this new album as being guided by four pillars represented by colors: PRESSURE (red), which leads to CLARITY (aqua blue), which gives FOCUS (green), and ultimately brings HAPPINESS (yellow gold). (“Yes” clip) Me too Sean. 21 songs, over an hour of new music – again the album is called Better Me Than You from Big Sean
  • (“Born to Run” clip) Mondo Cozmo played that song when he recorded his guest DJ spot on E Street Radio – part of XM Satellite Radio. During his DJ role playing, he explained how he plays songs by Bruce Springsteen for the happiness and the sad. (“Feel Good” clip) That wasn’t a Bruce song there though, that was a throw back to 2022 by Mondo Cozmo himself and what his music does for me – “Feel Good” (another clip) Sorry. I’m playing old stuff and he’s got new stuff. I’ve been looking forward to this full album drop too ever since I heard the first release “Angels” (clip) Today, the Spotify and artist push appears to be towards the title track of the album – It’s Principle! (clip)
  • Several quick hits of new music: Amy Allen released another new song called “to love me” – more importantly her new album comes out entirely next Friday. So much more on her – next Friday // Victoria Monet and Usher teamed up for a song – it’s called “SOS” which stands for Sex on Sight. Go enjoy – obviously it’s naughty. // Off of Sia’s most recent album – Reasonable Woman, there’s a song called “Immortal Queen” which guests Chaka Khan. Today – there’s a remix where they add Debbie Harry to the song. (Clip)

Happy 33rd to Ten! / My favorite track wasn’t Alive, Jeremy, or even, Even Flow / Quote from Eddie Vedder

morning babble / Tuesday 08-27-24

Borrowing words from someone else in an attempt to spread happiness everywhere or at the very least – a reasonable range. Hey – go click that video!

(“Even Flow” clip)

Happy Birthday, Ten! You just turned 33. That’s right – on this date back in 1991 – the debut studio album from Pearl Jam was released. This album produced three hit singles: “Jeremy”, “Alive”, and the one that you just heard a bit of “Even Flow.”

However, my favorite from the the album – “Why Go”

(“Why Go” Clip)
