Missed Music Monday – 04-01-24

morning babble / Monday 04-01-24

This is the scribble that leads to the babble. Sometimes, it gets tidied up; but other times, not so much. When all else fails: watch the video!

Happy Monday – unfortunately, that’s not an April Fool’s Day joke – it’s Monday.

(Missed Music Monday opener)

Last October, The Gaslight Anthem released their first studio album in 9 years called: History Books. A 10-pack of musical joy from a Jersey band who just performed in the NHL’s Stadium Series (clip) Being a Flyers fan myself, I didn’t enjoy seeing the band bearing the Devil Red Jerseys, but I get it – they are from that area. Maybe this is also why I tuned out recently (fingers in your ears kids) which is probably why I missed their 4-pack EP called History Book – Short Stories. 2 acoustics versions from the History Books songs, a cover of a Billie Eilish song, but the 4th cut is what I did thoroughly enjoy. It was a redone version of their song “Blue Jeans & White T-Shirts” which originally appeared on a 4-pack EP back in 2008. (cut) I just enjoy the instrument of Brian Fallon’s voice and what he can do with a song.

Happy Birthday to All! / new music friday: Lyell, St. Vincent, Myles Smith / Singer from Destiny’s Child (Beyoncé) quote

morning babble / Friday 03-29-24

This is the scribble that leads to the babble. Sometimes, it gets tidied up; but other times, not so much. When all else fails: watch the video!

“Rap God” cut

Maybe not quite like a Rap God, but I did feel pretty amazing after all those birthday wishes – many thanks again. However, the days that follow – so lonely.

“Back To Life” cut

Happy weekend / Happy Easter weekend to all who celebrate the bunny. One will be visiting here and there is going to be so much candy again. I think we just finished up the Halloween candy, too. Welp – I’m up for the challenge. (Get in my belly)

And I do want to say “Happy Birthday” to everyone. I’m going to miss some of your bdays this year and I’m so sorry when I do. I mean to send along the wishes – it’s just not something I always look for on the social media apps – I’ve turned off the notifcations and such – otherwise, I’d be time sucked away.

New Music Friday:

I put together a Spotify playlist of the songs that I talked about and thought about today for New Music Friday. Click here for that!

  • I think I would be banned from any new music talk, if I didn’t lead with this one. Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter has finally arrived in its entirety. We already received the singles “16 Carriages” and “Texas Hold ’Em” (clip) That’s the one – that Beyoncé made history as the first Black woman ever to top Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart. With this album, I was excited to see AND HEAR – her version of Dolly Parton’s “Jolene” (clip) Spotify is pushing a duet she does with Miley Cyrus. However, the duet that jump out to me was the one with Post Malone – I bet it jumped out to certain jean company as well (clip) Now, I guarantee that Levi’s already knew this song was coming, but could you image them not – and then waking up today and just finding out? (Jim Carrey drop) Are there any songs about Morning Babble? 27 Songs on Cowboy Carter, but Nope.
  • (“Broken Man” cut) St. Vincent has a new album arriving on April 26th – called All Born Screaming. Couple weeks ago, we got the 1st single “Broken Man” which featured Dave Grohl on drums (cut) That’s Dave. And apparently, he is appearing on more than just one song on this new album. The second release also has the Foo Fighters lead man hitting the drums again. Looking forward to all the new music from St. Vincent, but today – let’s go and enjoy “Flea” (“Flea” cut)
  • At the beginning of the Babble, I played a cut of Soul II Soul’s “Back to Life” (clip) And – I just played it again. Vampire Weekend samples this same song within their 4th release rom their upcoming album: Only God Was Above Us – all out on April 5th. The song is called “Mary Boone” (clip) I dug a little deeper on this song, because I read the post from Pitchfork’s Matthew Strauss. I learned that “Mary Boone” is named after the New York gallery owner who was greatly influential in the 1980s. Boone closed her two galleries in 2019 ahead of a federal prison stint for offenses connected to tax fraud. She has now served her 30-month sentence and is out of prison.” Good – a happy ending and a good song. //
  • Several quick hits of new music: Rock & Roll Hall of Famer – Sheryl Crow just released her 11th studio album – it’s called Evolution // Someone that I’ve been tracking is Lyell – she appears along with two others on the new song “Lighthouse” // “Please, love this song, it’s personal” are some of the lyrics from the first song on Awolnation’s upcoming new album. This song was also one of the first songs writtern for it. This is “Panoramic View” (clip)

Thank you to Spotify, Rolling Stone, Apple Music, uDiscoverMusic, Pigeons & Planes, Pitchfork, Louder, Dan Deluca of the Philly Inquirer & I know there’s more.

Be sure to check out the playlist on Spotify and yes, as I mentioned in the beginning, it’s a playlist of songs that I’ve talked about and thought about: so, you’ll see some new music there from Twenty One Pilots, The Talbott Brothers, and Myles Smith. By the way, I loved Myles’ Instagram post about receiving a big billboard of himself in the UK (clip) He states “thanks @amazonmusicuk for helping me convince my mum this is a real job.”

Welcome to Monday! Hitting 3 different genres today for:

(Missed Music Monday opener)

1) I’m very open about my fandom towards country music. It’s not strong. But – I am a fan of Kane Brown, who released a song called “Fiddle in the Band.”

Why yes Kenny Chesney did release a new album. Kane Brown.

2) Not too sure of the era breakdowns with Hip-Hop, but I feel this was a little bit of a throwback with Big Sean releasing his song “Presicison”

3) Remi Wolf – do yourself a favor and go read her bio listed on Spotify. Claims she was born in 1458 in what is now considered France. Maybe a vampire? That’s a genre all to herself. While you’re at it, go check out the new single “Cinderella”

Babystepping deeper into my 50s – still know rock though! / new music friday with Bryce Fox, Friday Pilots Club, Elbow, & Adrianne Lenker

“Cult of Personality” Cut

That’s an old song. I’m an old dude, who actually gets older next week. Still rocks though.

“Cult of Personality” Cut

Morning Babble Opener

That song from the beginning is the 1989 song “Cult of Personality” via the band Living Colour who actually toured last year with the band Extreme (clip) I don’t feel like we need anything more than them, but as for Living Color, I was excited to hear that they were still out there doing their thing. I’m not sure if lead singer, Corey Glover, would do the yellow jumpsuit trick again though (clip) Maybe, who knows.

My birthday is next week. I babystep deeper into my 50s. I’ll be 51 next Wednesday. I’ll provide a P.O. Box to where you can send gifts. Just kidding. BUT – you can gift me by subscribing on YouTube or if you’ve already done that – have someone else subscribe! Spread the Babble. I would love that for my birthday.

New Music Friday:

I put together a Spotify playlist of the songs that I talked about and thought about today for New Music Friday. Click here for that!

  • Friday Pilots Club released a 3rd single off their upcoming debut album called: Nowhere, which drops on May 9th. The previous release, I’m still hooked on and that one is called “Spectator” (clip). And, the one before that was “Vampire Disco” (clip). But let’s get back to the now – 3rd release / tease of the new album is called “We Don’t Wanna Talk.” (clip)
  • Recently, I’ve been digging into the music of Bryce Fox. On Spotify, he describes himself as having a diverse diet of muscial genres, from punk and country to classic rock and hip-hop. I totally agree. The one song that I’ve been playing a lot came out two years ago in 2022 – that one is called “Golden Boy” (clip) It totally reminds me of a Black Pistol Fire or Black Keys type of sound to it. So needless to say, I was psyched when I saw today that he has a new song out. Appears he’s building towards another full album with 3 prior releases. Anyway, today let’s go enjoy “Trust Nobody” (clip)
  • From “Trust Nobody” to an album titled: We Don’t Trust You. Future and Metro Boomin have released this album – 17 songs and 13 seconds short of a full hour of new music. I’m still digging through it all, but track #6 is “Like That” is one that jumped out to me. Mr. Kendrick Lamar takes a turn with verse 2 (clip) Apparently something going on there with Drake and J. Cole. I don’t know enough – all I do know. I’m Team Kendrick (clip)
  • Jumping all over the place today with different sounds. This particular one isn’t necessarily a sound that I would typically go for, but I’m going to try because of reading a review from Pitchfork’s Andy Cush – Let me play you a quick clip of the song (cut) That’s “Sadness of a Gift.” Words of Andy Cush: “Two songs on Adrianne Lenker’s Bright Future begin with the woosh of a tape machine settling into its correct speed. The players sometimes murmur among themselves as a song gets going or winds down; Lenker’s voice occasionally grows distant, as though she were turning away from the mic, then rises in volume as she leans forward again.” Andy sold this album to me when he gave it an 8.4. Lastly, if Adrianne Lenker sounds familiar – well, she is the lead singer of Big Thief (clip) / Also, here’s the link to the GQ article from Cush – click here
  • Several quick hits of new music: Elbow’s album Audio Vertigo is out in its entirety – that’s what I want to listen to several times this weekend. Was that a groan from the crowd? Dad rock // Another album that I’ll be listening to all weekend is from Gary Clark Jr. with his JPEG Raw album, 12 songs, and the one being pushed by Spotify called “What About the Children” has Stevie Wonder contributing // Pearl Jam have released the 2nd single off their upcoming album Dark Matter which is due out on 4/19. Oooo – and I wanted to correct something. For Record Store Day, which is the very next day – 4/20, they are releasing an exclusive yellow & black ghostly LP for the new album – Dark Matter. Today, we can enjoy the song “Running” (clip)

Thank you to Spotify, Rolling Stone, Apple Music, uDiscoverMusic, Pigeons & Planes, Pitchfork, Louder, Dan Deluca of the Philly Inquirer & I know there’s more.

Be sure to check out the playlist on Spotify and yes, as I mentioned in the beginning, it’s a playlist of songs that I’ve talked about and thought about: so, you’ll see some new music there from Gaslight Anthem, girl in red, and more.

(Missed Music Monday opener)

On Friday, the new album from Justin Timberlake dropped in its entirety – Everything I Thought It Was (Dennis Green drop) Close but that’s not what I said. Again it’s Everything I Thought It Was. I did listen to all 18 songs. An hour an 17 minutes worth of JT. That’s a lot. I do enjoy his music (“Have you naked” cut) That’s a good line from an older song (Boing) That’s from the new album, track #10 called “Sanctified.” I don’t think I’m going to get anywhere if I say “Boing. That’s what it do when I see you.” (Imagination) Someone tastes like cotton candy? That sounds fun. (to the car) So, I’m going to be here for awhile. Giving the new Justin Timberlake album another go. It just sounds different in the car. Meanwhile, I’m trapped with nowhere to go.
