Missed Music Monday – Mmmmmmmm!

morning babble / Monday 02-26-24

This is the scribble that leads to the babble. Sometimes, it gets tidied up; but other times, not so much. When all else fails: watch the video!

So, I made a new blue card

(Missed Music Monday opener)

Happy Monday! On Fridays – I enjoy a thing that I call New Music Friday – and try to review some of the best new music. I can’t touch it all though. Hence, I’m trying this little bit out: Missed Music Monday

(1) Couple weeks back – Gary Clark Jr. gave us four new studio tracks from his upcoming album, JPEG RAW, set for full release on March 22nd. But last week, we did get the 5th released track called “Alone Together” and features the jazz trumpeter Keyon Harrold.

(2) Also, on Friday, we received songs from Selena Gomez and Machine Gun Kelly or MGK or as he stressed via the red carpet for everyone to call him now “Machine”. Maybe I didn’t “miss” those. Team Eminem, here.

(3) Donna Missal who I’m actually going to see next month at the Foundry in Philly came out with a 4-pack of acoustic songs under the EP title: Revel Acoustic Sessions

Songs of Inspiration & Motivation as well as New Music Friday with: Kings of Leon, SZA, Linkin Park

morning babble / Friday 02-23-24

This is the scribble that leads to the babble. Sometimes, it gets tidied up; but other times, not so much. When all else fails: watch the video!

(Wretches and Kings cut)

Music is important to me in so many ways – it’s especially important with motivation

(Wretches and Kings cut)

(Morning Babble intro)

New Music Friday:

Happy Weekend! I’m always happy for New Music Friday. You just never know what new song or sound might resonate with you, connect with you. Be added to a playlist for you.

(Wretches and Kings cut)

That song is from Linkin Park and is called “Wretches and Kings.” It’s on one of my Spotify playlists made for running. FYI – new song out today from Linkin Park – more on that shortly. To this day though, I am always amazed how a song can transition me out of a funky mood or simply motivate me. Songs of Inspiration and Motivation. Wasn’t that the title of a Depeche Mode album (fact checking) Nope. I was thinking of Songs of Faith and Devotion – it rhymes, but that’s about it. (Walking in My Shoes cut) Not the most uplifting album from those Depeche Mode boys. Lots of depression and misery there – which is fine. I try to choose songs that are upbeat and happy during my paperwork days. Although, I was listening to the Sam Cooke radio channel on Spotify. (Another Saturday Night) – it’s upbeat but not all that happy. However, this part always makes me smile (2 chicks on my arm) “I’d be swinging two chicks on my arm” – oh yeah. You go Sam Cooke – one of the best singers ever. By far, one of my most favorite albums to put on. (song cut)

Let’s get into the new stuff though with New Music Friday

As always, I put together a Spotify playlist of the songs that I talked about and thought about today for New Music Friday. Click here for that!

  • First up – as described in the local papers around here – Delaware State University alum, Sza (Kill Bill clip) That song “Kill Bill” gets good play on Spotify. Anyway – yes, Sza did go to Delaware State University or Del-State, where she planned to major in marine biology. But – not for long, she dropped out – I’m not picking. In fact, she sorta picks on her time spent there – I’ll provide the Peoples magazine link – Click here! She states “I drank Malibu and smoked weed every day. And slept.” That’s Del-State. (“Saturn” cut) – and that’s Sza’s new song release “Saturn” which if you watched the Grammy’s this year. You would have heard it during that long MasterCard commercial.
  • (Sex on Fire) Kings of Leon have announced their first new album with Capitol Records – FYI – this is their 9th studio album overall and it’s called – Can We Please Have Fun. The full drop happens on May 10th, but today – we can enjoy the new track: “Mustang” (clip)
  • Coming April 12th, Linkin Park will release their first career-spanning greatest hits album called: Papercuts. There will be 20 tracks which include songs like “In the End”, “Crawling” and, of course, their very first release ever “One Step Closer” (clip) However, it also includes what might be one of the final recordings of singer Chester Bennington, who we lost in 2017. We get the unreleased track “Friendly Fire” (clip)
  • Several quick hits of new music: Lil Durk has a new single out called “Old Days” – digs into everything – past life on the streets, battles with drug addiction, lost friends, but he also declares that “The Streets are Over.” Be sure to give it a listen // Jack Antonoff’s band Bleachers just released “Me before You” which is their 4th song of their upcoming self-titled album . . . called Bleachers // JT – Justin Timberlake – continues his comeback attempt since 2018’s Man of the Woods album. We get the 2nd release off of Everything I Thought It Was — fully out on March 15th – here’s “Drown” (clip)

Thank you to Spotify, Rolling Stone, Apple Music, uDiscoverMusic, Pigeons & Planes, Pitchfork, Louder, Dan Deluca of the Philly Inquirer & I know there’s more.

Afroman “Because I Got High” Clip

The list is out for Record Store Day 2024 which is on April 20th aka 4/20.

Afroman “Because I Got High” Clip

Morning Babble intro

Happy Weekend – I’m all smiles today – although our household is battling some sickness. My little girl was home from school – all week. The only twisted benefit with this sick time with her – all the extra “I love you, Daddys” that I receive. (awwww sounder)

Very exciting things are happening with the release of the Record Store Day list for 2024.

This year’s Record Store Day Ambassadors also won Best Rock Album at this year’s Grammys. (clip) That’s “This Is Why” off the album This Is Why – the band is called Paramore and being the Ambassadors of Record Store Day – of course, they’re on the list of 4/20 releases. They’ll be offering the first physical issue of the remixed album of This Is Why which features 11 remixes of songs from the Grammy award winning album – it’ll be available on its own or in a bundle with the OG of This Is Why.

(Pearl Jam – Spin the Black Circle) Pearl Jam – they have a new album out on 4/19 (Taylor Swift clip) and yes, that’s the same day the new Taylor Swift album is out. BUT for record store day, they are releasing an exclusive yellow & black ghostly LP for their new album – Dark Matter. (“Dark Matter” clip)

Staying with the grunge scene which sort of began back in 1980 with the band- Malfunkshun – they had a guy by the name of Andrew Wood who then went on to be in a band called Green River – which included two Pearl Jam members. Andrew Wood was eventually upfront for the band Mother Love Bone (Stargazer). Unfortunately, there was an overdose and that’s how Temple of the Dog album was put together and created for Andrew “Dog” Wood (“Say Hello 2 Heaven” clip)

Did you follow all of that? So, being released on Record Store Day is Olympus Awaits which is a definitive compilation of all Malfunkshun recordings.

(clip) “Bleed It Out” – I’ve run to that song – really, really hard. The band is Linkin Park who is NOT having a release on Record Store Day. BUT – that dude singing was Chester Bennington who could really wail. Back in 2005, he headed and formed the band Dead by Sunrise. For Record Store Day, made available is the first-ever North American vinyl pressing – on Black Ice vinyl – of the album: Out of Ashes, (clip)

So, I want Paramore, Pearl Jam, Malfunkshun, and Dead by Sunrise for this year’s Record Store Day. FYI – I always hit up my local shop at Rainbow Records in Newark, DE

I’ll provide a link to the entire list as well. Click here for that! (Weezer clip)

One final note. Back to Taylor Swift who was the first-ever Global Ambassador for Record Store Day back in 2022 and does have an album coming out on April 19th . . . nothing is on the release list – yet? During an Eras Tour stop in Australia, she did announce that she’ll be releasing a deluxe version of her upcoming album, The Tortured Poets Department, with a previously unannounced song, “The Bolter,” and new cover art.

Wait – isn’t this New Music Friday Day? (clip)

New Music Friday:

I put together a Spotify playlist of the songs that I talked about and thought about today for New Music Friday. Click here for that!

  • Several quick hits of new music:  From her forthcoming sequel to Renaissance titled Act II, Beyoncé goes pop-country on the lead single “Texas Hold ‘Em”
  • Pearl Jam have announced a world tour and a new album. Dark Matter, the band’s 12th full-length studio album, arrives on April 19. The song by the same title is out already
  • A favorite of mine that I warned you about Vampire Weekend has two new songs out: “Capricorn” and “Gen-X Cops”. Speaking of this fabulous band, I did just receive: Frog on the Bass Drum Vol. 2. What about Vol. 1 – well, I’m glad you asked. They sold out before I could get them. I hit up Trying to get Frog on the bass drum Vol. 01 – visited ebay and the Discogs website – that vinyl goes for over $200 now. I’ll provide a link in case anyone would donate to the program.

https://www.discogs.com/release/24049169-Vampire-Weekend-Frog-On-The-Bass-Drum-Vol-01-Live-In-Indianapolis-6719

  • Val Astaire came out with an album last year and it’s a good one – Everything Good Must Happen Somewhere Else. There was a little 2 minute love song on that album called “Love A Little”. So, this past week an extended version was put out for this past Valentine’s Day. Awww. Heart. Actually – that’s more like a butt. (clip)
  • Totally missed this last week – Brittany Howard – The second solo album from the Alabama Shakes singer-songwriter is out and called What Now. I’ve dug into it a little bit. The song “Power to Undo” sounds like Prince (clip) FYI – Back in 2015 with Alabama Shakes – Prince appeared with them on stage.
