Pink Cut of “So What”
Happy New Year?
Pink Cut of “So What”
Morning Babble Intro
Yes – Happy First Weekend of 2024 and I guess one final Happy 2024 and that’s it out of me for new year’s wishes. (Larry David drop)
I opened the Babble today with Pink and her song “So What”. I heard some new music today which triggered that song in my head . . . I’ll get to it shortly.
It took me several hours to click-click-click through the files in my head to figure out what song it was making me think of. Initially, I thought it was The Pretty Reckless (clip) Kept going through song after song of them. By the way, Taylor Momsen is the lead singer of that band but she is also known for playing Cindy Lou Who with Jim Carrey in “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”. (clip) I just have to say. I loved her Instagram posts around the holidays. She fully embraced having done that role and put out some really fun holiday posts. She’s a rocker and it was nice to see that. I then pivoted (clip) to Kesha. I played a lot of Kesha (clip) – I really thought it was Kesha (clip) It wasn’t Kesha. But then – click, click, click – it happened – PINK! (clip) I’ll get to that in a bit.
Let me handle business. Subscribers wanted / Newsletter Babbler is out
New Music Friday:
I put together a Spotify playlist of the songs that I talked about and thought about today for New Music Friday. Click here for that! SUBSCRIBE!!!!!!
First up – remember the song “Laid”, remembering getting laid? Alright this is awkward – play the clip (James – “Laid”). From 1993, that’s “Laid” by the band: James. Today, from the band July Talk we get a cover of the song (clip – girl singing) I’m not all that familiar with the band and I liked the girl’s voice, but then (clip – guy singing) I wasn’t ready for that transition. I wasn’t. I liked it though. This is actually part of a 5 song EP that they released in late December, but it popped up – Laid – on my Spotify Release Radar list today, so I wanted to pass it along. Being good is not one of my new year’s resolutions (clip)
Couple hip-hop songs got my attention. This first one I really connected with (clip) Alright, maybe not that part, but I did eventually connect and thoroughly enjoyed that one – which was “Good Intentions” from 24kGoldn (clip). More hip-hop – on New Year’s Day, The Game and Big Hit teamed up along with producer Hit-Boy for a new album: Paisley Dreams. The song that I heard and enjoyed was “P-Fiction” (clip)
Green Day – new album “Saviors” drops on January 19th – thats their 14th studio album – that’s also known as – a lot. For the time being, the boys did give us another song to enjoy (clip) That’s called “One Eyed Bastard” and that’s the song that made me think of the PINK song “So What” – it was the very beginning of it. We’ll do the back & forth thing. This is Green Day (clip) this is PINK (clip) again, Green Day (clip) and PINK (clip). Do you think they got that? //
Several quick hits of new music: Playboi Carti has released a new song with Travis Scott called “Backr00ms,” alongside a music video which features Carti showering a dancer with money. Go Google that one // The Boston Trio – Pile – released a 5 song EP called Hot Air Ballon. Couple months ago – one of the songs was released with a video called “The Birds Attacked My Hot Air Balloon.” I’m going to go a little deeper on these guys. // And lastly, if you’re in Philly, it’s David Bowie week. All my years of being in the area and being in radio, unfortunately, I had never heard of Bowie week in Philly. I learned about it while reading the article from Dan Deluca of the Philly inquirer. I’ll link the story – click here (clip)
Thank you to Spotify, Rolling Stone, Apple Music, uDiscoverMusic, Pigeons & Planes, Pitchfork, Louder, Dan Deluca of the Philly Inquirer & I know there’s more.

Not much going on – It’s Taint week – Taint Christmas and it Taint New Years
(Seven Little Girls clip)
Morning Babble Opener
Like that opening song? From 1959, that’s Paul Evans (no relation) singing “Seven Little Girls Sitting in the Backseat.” He’s very jealous of Fred who’s the only dude in the back with those 7 girls. (clip)
So, almost 2024 – and the final New Music Friday list for 2023 – not too girthy and I know we all like girth.
Initially, the pickings were so slim that I was in panic mode and it made me think about some other things to talk about
Favorite Vinyl Album of 2023 – First Two Pages of Frankenstein by The National (clip)
When I went to pull this album, I stumbled across my first record received when I returned to collecting vinyl again – Mumford & Sons – Sigh No More (clip)
I then began remembering my firsts . . for music
My first CD was the self-titled Genesis album from 1983: Genesis by I couldn’t find the CD, only the cassette (clip)
I then thought back or backwards forward to my first iPod and the first downloaded album which was Plans by Death Cab for Cutie
Now, I mentioned that Mumford & Sons was my “return” to collecting vinyl. As a young boy, I had my favorite 45s that I collected and I found some of my favorites:
The Oak ridge Boys and “Elvira” (clip) Nobody sings like that anymore
I’ve got Buckner & Garcia with “Pac-Man Fever” (clip)
Olivia Newton-John singing about “working out” with Physical (clip)
and finally, I have the Theme Song from TV show “The Greatest American Hero” – the song is called “Believe It or Not”(clip)
Just thought I would share what I began digging up and finding.

A very special New Music Friday because it lacks girth
We do have Myles Smith who is a singer apparently out of the UK . . . he’s got a strong social media presence – he has nearly half-a-million followers on Instagram. Is that close to me? (clip) Alright – recently – all the way back in November, Myles had the hit song “Solo” (clip) Today, we get the song “Behind” (clip)
Last month, Belgian DJ Lost Frequencies released his third studio album: All Stand Together – his first album since 2019. Today – he’s giving you exactly what you need as we head into 2024 is an uplifting song filled with optimism. Need that energy boost. Bastille joined forces with Lost Frequencies for the new single “Head Down” (clip)
This one is completely new to me – I believe the band is called bby and they came out with a 2-pack of songs today under the album title of: I just Want Next Year to Be Better. – that’s what caught my attention and made me smile. The two songs are “shhh” and “spinnin 88”. I jumped all over the place learning this from their Instagram, YouTube page, also, it appears that you can call them? I could be so wrong about some of this. I’m 50. Here’s shhh (clip)
Several quick hits of new music that I’m looking forward to hearing in 2024! // January 12th – The Vaccines with Pick-Up Full of Pink Carnations // January 19th – Green Day with Saviors // February 2nd – Brittany Howard with What Now // There’s also albums coming out from Jennifer Lopez, Usher, Lenny Kravitz, Bleachers, Cardi B, and so much more.

Taint Week – It’s also the week when outside decorations fall over and people don’t care anymore. I don’t care if Santa is laying down – he’s tired anyway.

“How much is that doggie in the window? I hope that he is for sale.”
He was for sale and we got him. Meet Frankie. Named after a family favorite.
“J-I-N-G-L-E Bells”
He’s a shedder. (Shitter’s full) Shedder – he’s a shedder. However . . . what he does outside is another story. Happy Christmas Weekend to all who celebrate! And to those who don’t – it’s still the weekend! It’s a glorious time.
2023 coming to an end and new music is a little sparse unfortunately. (Grinch echo) Next weekend – who knows what will be out. This is when a lot of “live” tracks are released since in a couple weeks, new music today is so last year. (Grinch)

Just prior to Turkey Day Week, Porno for Pyros with the original line-up together released their first new song in 26 years called “Agua.” (clip) And now, they just released another one but this is a holiday song called “Pete’s Dad.” Via Pitchfork’s Evan Minsker, I learened that “the track is about the band spending the holidays with guitarist Peter DiStefano’s father. It also tells the story of DiStefano’s dad surviving cancer. (clip)
If I ignored this one, my son would disown me. The first official new track of 2023 is now out from Juice WRLD. Produced by Juice WRLD’s longtime collaborator and friend benny blanco. The song is called “Lace It” and has some guy by the name of Eminem on it (clip)
Back in my radio days, I worked with Frank. He was the General Sales Manager of our little oldies station? We played 80s and 90s (clip) Anyway, he had some kids, I had some kids. And one of his – a son is all grown up! Scary when the kids become adults. His son’s band – Swing ‘N a Miss – dropped their full album – Can’t Win Them All. Go give them a listen – the song that they are pushing on YouTube: “Leave Me Tonight” (clip)
Several quick hits of new music: INXS fans – there is a new remix out of “Listen Like Thieves” – just an FYI // Barbie star Ryan Gosling (clip) dropped 3 new versions of ‘I’m Just Ken’ — including a Christmas cover // Megan Thee Stallion has a new song out from the Netflix series “Big Mouth” – you’ll have to go look up the name of this song. That’s all I’m saying. // Look who crashed BBC Radio 1 – it was Boygenius who did a special cover of Shania Twain’s classic “You’re Still the One” – you can only catch it on YouTube though (clip)

Back on April 29th, Willie Nelson turned 90. That’s a birthday celebration with a whole lot of birthday cake . . . and brownies. Well, they recorded it and are playing it back for all of us on Sunday night, December 17th. Held in LA – where else? – it featured performances from Nelson himself (making him work on his birthday), plus Sheryl Crow, Snoop Dogg, Norah Jones, Beck (clip) – that song from Beck is of course a Willie cover – “Hands on the Wheel.” This event took place on Willie’s actual birthday of April 29th and the April 30th – a two day event. Back to all the performers, you’ll also get to hear Miranda Lambert, Dave Matthews, Chris Stapleton. and while Gary Clark Jr. plays on guitar, Leon Bridges covering the Willie song “Night Life” (clip) The album has officially dropped and is called Long Story Short: Willie Nelson 90 (Live at the Hollywood Bowl) – 53 songs, over 3 hours of music. (clip – Happy Birthday Willie)
The Talbott Brothers – I’ve talked about these guys before (“Dancing in the Dark” clip) That’s them doing the Springsteen cover of “Dancing in the Dark.” However, tis the season for some holiday tunes and they’ve done it in the past and have done it well, so why not do it again (clip) It’s called “That Spirit of Christmas.” I was amused by the cover (pix) Looking so good guys (pix) Did my mom send that in?
We go from one fun album cover to another (clip) Ehhh – that’s a different kind of fun. Reneé Rapp teamed up with Megan Thee Stallion for that new song: “Not My Fault” – it’s first single from the official soundtrack for the upcoming Mean Girls movie due out in Jan. //
Several quick hits of new music: Wilmington DE native – Richard Raw – has dropped a new album called: The Crown. He was recently featured in the Delaware Magazine Out & About – click here // Lil Baby closing out 2023 with a 2-pack of new songs – we get “Crazy” and “350″ // Sammy Rash came out with another new song called “you+me” – that dude is a song machine! // And finally, 65 years after it’s “new music” release, Brenda Lee’s “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” is officially the most popular song in the U.S. (clip)

QUOTE OF THE DAY: “If you wait for tomorrow to follow your dreams, by the time that you get there, they’re gone.” – by Willie Nelson
