This Ear-worm of a Song is Stuck / Quote of the Day from Kevin Kelly via Arnold

5K EVERY DAY – Day #96

(song)

As explained by Wikipedia, “Cotton Eye Joe” is a song by the Swedish Eurodance group Rednex, released on August 12th back in 1994. I know it has nothing to do with today’s date, so why am I playing it.

(song)

Twice I heard it yesterday at my daughter’s softball opening day ceremony. That should be illegal. It’s already a song that can get stuck and then to play it twice – super stuck. I ran.

Memorable Sad Day for Grunge / Quote of the Day from Kurt Cobain

5K EVERY DAY – Day #95

(“All Apologies”)

On this date, 31 years ago at the age of 27, we lost Kurt Cobain.

BUT – also on this date, 23 years ago at the age of 34, we lost Layne Staley

(“Would”)

April 5th will forever be a sad, sad day for grunge.

Mondo Cozmo Reaching Out Again with Shine / New Music Weekend: Miley Cyrus, Sleigh Bells, The Waterboys

new music weekend / Friday 04-04-25

(New Music Weekend Intro)

Happy Weekend! It’s baseball season, so I’m happy. BUT – you know who is also a happy guy – Mondo Cozmo (clip) His song “Shine” which was the 5th track on his 2017 debut album Plastic Soul but the song was revived (it will always be good) since it was played out during The Reacher season 3 finale (clip) I can’t actually play you what I want without getting in trouble. But that’s Reacher and I’m excited for Mondo Cozmo who is originally from Philadelphia. Living in LA now, but from Philadelphia. Cheer on those Phillies this weekend, Mondo. (clip)

New Music Weekend – Who’s coming up! The Big Sister of Noah Cyrus, Sleigh Bells ringing, The Waterboys (not Sandler), the Boss, and Ed Sheeran teaching us a new word.

(Countdown Video)

New Music Weekend:

  • Just a couple weeks ago, I was talking about a new song from Noah Cyrus, but this time it’s her big sis Miley who this past week shared a beautiful pair of songs from her new album, Something Beautiful. We got “Prelude” as well as the title track (song) Now THAT is a major close-up. I wouldn’t want you guys to witness that from me. Miley though – that’s okay. The song does pick up a little (clip) I wasn’t quite ready for that, but I do like it. Again that’s the title track “Something Beautiful.” Album arrives on May 30th – 13 tracks in all. And for the weekend, we get a third one to kick back and enjoy (clip) Actually that one sorta makes you sit upright at attention, huh. “End of the World” is that song. Here’s something I read from Pitchfork’s Jazz Monroe: Miley compares this record of hers to Pink Floyd’s The Wall, “but with a better wardrobe and more glamorous and filled with pop culture.” She’s always fun. Can we play a little more of her rolling around? Please? (clip)
  • Recently, when I’ve talked about Sleigh Bells, I’ve been playing a clip of this song (“Tell ‘Em”). Which I do like a lot, BUT – I also like this other “oldie” from them (“Rill Rill”) “Rill Rill” but again I say “oldie” because it’s from 2010. Now, Sleigh Bells has released other albums since then, but today, we get their 6th album – I have to say this one slowly: Bunky Becky Birthday Boy (“Bunky Pop”) 11 songs in all; spread out over 32 minutes – it’s a quickie but aren’t they always the most fun. Wait – what are talking about? (“Tell ‘Em”) That’s right, Sleigh Bells – the song being pushed by Spotify is “Badly” (clip)
  • I really do listen to a lot of music from all over the genre place, but never fear there’s always one that sneaks up on me (“The Whole of the Moon”) The Waterboys from been around since the early 80s – formed in London by singer/songwriter Mike Scott. Something like 15 albums – it’s a lot – more than my fingers. Today, they dropped their new concept album, Life, Death and Dennis Hopper (“Ten Years Gone”) Bruce Springsteen is just one of the contributors on this album. Another one that really jumped out to me was the powerful voice of Fiona Apple on “Letter From an Unknown Girlfriend” (clip) This album tallies 25 tracks in all. When the Waterboys’ Mike Scott was speaking of Dennis Hopper, he said: “The arc of his life was the story of our times.” (clip) or //
  • Several quick hits of new music: Bruce Springsteen is opening his vault and letting out seven ‘lost’ LPs. Arriving on June 27th, it’s called Tracks II: The Lost Albums – a collection of 83 songs on nine vinyl LPs or seven CDs – pick your preference. 74 of these songs have never been officially released in any form. // Beastie Boys Mike D (clip) is the producer of the new Hives album called: The Hives Forever Forever The Hives. Full drop on August 29th // ‘Azizam’ is a Persian word that means “my dear” when translated to English. It also happens to be the new love song from Ed Sheeran about his wife, Cherry Seaborn (clip)

Thank you to Spotify, Rolling Stone, Apple Music, uDiscoverMusic, Pigeons & Planes, Pitchfork, Louder, Spill Magazine, Dan Deluca of the Philly Inquirer & I know there’s more.

I put together a Spotify playlist of the songs that I talked about and thought about today for New Music Friday. Click here for that! Anything that I really messed up and missed – well, that’s why I’ll be doing Missed Music Monday on Monday.

Spinning the Lime Green Circle of INXS / Quote of the Day from Leo Tolstoy courtesy of Ryan Holiday

5K EVERY DAY – Day #94

(“Need You Tonight”)

The other day I heard that song played at the Edge Gym. I was so happy, because normally it’s played because of me spinning the black circle here at home. As any true INXS fan knows from the album and video what follows “Need You Tonight”?

(“Mediate”)

“Mediate”. Ooooooo – that’s right. It’s a lime green circle that spins.

By the way – I ran another 5K today

The Hives New Music is Playing How I’m Feeling / Quote of the Day from Adam Horovitz (Ad-Rock)

5K EVERY DAY – Day #93

(The Hives “Enough is Enough”)

That song arrived a couple days ago – it’s The Hives with “Enough is Enough”

And – I fully agree. It’s been quite a month. What do you mean it’s only been 3 days?

(Day #93)

I was really hoping for May to arrive next week – guess I’ll have to be more patient.

5K Every Day did happen this morning on the treadmill at the gym.

By the way, The Hives have a new album coming out this summer – August 29th – AND it was produced by Mike D

Sadly, the News about Iceman wasn’t a Joke / Quote of the Day from Val Kilmer

5K EVERY DAY – Day #92

(Bowling for Soup “Val Kilmer”)

From 2006 – that’s Bowling for Soup with their song – “Val Kilmer”

With yesterday being April Fool’s Day – it’s always hard to believe some of the things reported on, but sadly this one appears to be true. At the age of 65, we lost actor Val Kilmer.

(“I’m your Huckleberry”)

My favorite movie from him right there – Tombstone – I believe everyone probably has their favorite Val Kilmer movie, whether it’s Heat, Top Gun, Batman Forever – maybe not Batman. I think he’d laugh at that too. Again, he was 65.

What was the 1st April Fool’s Day prank? / Quote of the Day from Edgar Allan Poe

5K EVERY DAY – Day #91

(“Nobody’s Fool” Cinderella)

Haven’t heard that one in awhile – Cinderella with “Nobody’s Fool”

Good luck with that today – be wary of the pranks, jokes, and giggling behind your back.

(“Mama” Genesis)

No jokes about this – 5K Every Day continues on . .

(Day #91)

The first reference to April Fools’ Day comes from a 1561 Flemish poem which describes a servant realizing that he was sent on “fool’s errands” because it was April 1st. So, we know that this tomfoolery of day was around in the 1500s, we just don’t know exactly how it all started.

Eiffel Tower Day – I had no idea there was such a thing / Quote of the Day from Voltaire

5K EVERY DAY – Day #90

(song)

That’s Phoenix – a band from France. Why is that significant? Well, today is Eiffel Tower Day. It was originally unveiled back in 1889, stands 1,063 feet tall and, of course, overlooks the city of Paris.

(song)

I got to see this thing – not last year, but the year before.

Analyzing The Edge’s Weekend Playlist / Quote of the Day from Chappell Roan

5K EVERY DAY – Day #89

(“The Sign”)

On the weekends, the Edge Gym opens at 7am. Right around 7:11am – yes, on both Saturday and Sunday – that song “The Sign” from Ace of Base is played along with its video. I had no idea how much random making out was going on in that video.

(“The Sign” video clip)

They talk about getting your heart rate up at the gym. I ran.

(#89)

Before The Sign was the latest from Role Model “Sally, When the Wine Runs Out”

(“Sally”

And then before that was the HOT TO GO! song.

New Music Weekend Plays All Weekend Long with Mumford, FITZ, St. Vincent, & Linkin Park

new music weekend / Friday 03-28-25

(New Music Weekend Intro)

Happy Weekend – I’ve decided to change up my New Music Friday card with a new one – New Music Weekend, because it can be enjoyed all weekend long. Hopefully – “enjoyed” isn’t a stretch for too many of you. What’s coming up! Mo Mumford, New Fitz, and someone who had my #3 album of 2024.

(Countdown Video)

New Music Weekend:

  • Mumford and Sons, the English folk-rock trio – used to be a quartet of fellas, but Marshall the Banjo player is gone now. Long story. So, with the new album, you’ll get more synthetic sounds for texture rather than old-time banjo. They’re still there though. (“Rushmere”) Rushmere is the group’s fifth studio album and first one in 7 years. Song being pushed on Spotify and I believe would appeal to FM Radio is “Caroline” (clip) Another good sound that I enjoyed off the album from the Mumford boys was a little more rock & roll with their song “Truth” (clip)
  • First new song of 2025 has been delivered by Fitz and The Tantrums (“HandClap”) That’s not it. That’s “HandClap” from 2016 – a fun one to enjoy at any Fitz live show (“HandClap”) Back to the new music – not sure if a whole album is coming, but I’ll take whatever I can get from this band. (clip) The new song is about kicking free some memories of the past. You know the ones that just won’t go. It’s called “Ruin The Night.” (clip)
  • At the end of 2024 – I did a Top 20 albums of 2024. At #3, it was All Born Screaming from St. Vincent (“Flea”) So good, I got it on vinyl, too. As I mentioned then and still do today, the song that I play way too much “Broken Man” (clip) Needless to say, when I heard that she released a new song she created for the horror comedy Death of a Unicorn – I was excited. Here it is “DOA” (clip)
  • Several quick hits of new music: Like other pop stars, Arianna Grande has jumped on the ‘deluxe’ album bandwagon as she releases the deluxe version of her latest album Eternal Sunshine with the subtitle “Brighter Days Ahead” – you get 5 new songs on this deluxe album // Lil Durk is behind bars and has NOT been released yet. BUT – his management team was able to piece together a 20-track Deep Thoughts album from him that has been released. Can you listen to Spotify in jail? // If the pop stars can do it, so can the rock stars. Linkin Park will be releasing the deluxe version of their 2024 album, From Zero on May 16th. It appears that we’ll get 3 new songs from them, but today we do get one called “Up From The Bottom” (clip)

Thank you to Spotify, Rolling Stone, Apple Music, uDiscoverMusic, Pigeons & Planes, Pitchfork, Louder, Spill Magazine, Dan Deluca of the Philly Inquirer & I know there’s more.
