Who rides the wrecking ball better: Miley or Super Nana? / New Music Friday: Bryce Fox, bby, Glass Animals

morning babble / Friday 07-19-24

Sometimes, it gets tidied up; other times, not so much.

When all else fails: there’s video!

(Breeders “Cannonball”)

That’s the beginning of the song “Cannonball” by the Breeders. My grandmother – Super Nana – use to have an actual cannonball outside of her house. When Miley Cyrus came out with her song “Wrecking Ball”, my grandmother joked about setting it up like Miley did in her video. I miss my Super Nana.

(Miley Cyrus “Wrecking Ball”)

(Morning Babble Intro)

Happy Weekend! Who wants to swing around on a wrecking ball? I forgot about that song from Miley. I’m not sure if my grandmother ever got the chance to really saw the entire video (clip) because there were some parts that I’m hoping she would not be reenacting. (clip) How did we get here? Well, Kim Deal has a new solo song out called “Coast.” (clip) If you don’t know where Kim Deal came from – well, let me show you (clip) Kim Deal is the Breeders singer and guitarist. That song is “Cannonball” All these thoughts came tumbling out because of Kim’s new music. Speaking of new.

New Music Friday:

I put together a Spotify playlist of the songs that I talked about and thought about today for New Music Friday. Click here for that!

  • Glass Animals just dropped their 4th studio album in nearly 4 years – as for the title, well it would make author Mark Manson proud. (clip of Manson’s book) Just like the book, people are going to have some difficulty explaining what they’re listening to. Album title is: I Love You So F***ing Much. BUT – I have to admit. Everywhere that I see this album – it isn’t spelled out fully. (picture of album) I know, I know. I understand the inteniton, but enough about the album title – music! 40 minutes of music spread out over 10 songs. I’ve been all in since the first release (clip of “Creatures in Heaven”)
  • bby – called Baby – has their new album out called “1”. By the way, don’t google Baby and 1 – you’ll hear things that you don’t want to really hear again (“Hit Me Baby One More Time”) The album is called 1 because . . . well . . it’s their first one. Several songs of this album have already been released and I’ve talked about them. 16 in total but today’s push is going towards the song: “Kinky” (clip)
  • Couple weeks ago, I was looking for more info on Jack Kays who released “Blow It” (clip) All I could find is that he’s from Cinncinnati, Ohio, which led me to the interesting political tidbit that the name of Grant’s horse was Cinncinnati (clip) Jack Kays has been busy and just released that song “Get A Job.” There’s a part in there that made me laugh. I’m going to have to clip it and send it to my businness partner named Bob (clip)
  • Before we get into the quick hits of new music, I’m highlighting this one from Bryce Fox (clip) That’s his latest song called “Drip.” Back in May, he dropped a 5-Song EP. Since then, he’s released “Shadows” (clip) and now “Drip” – I smell LP coming. Let’s play “Drip” again (clip)
  • Several quick hits of new music: Hippo Campus just released “Paranoid” which is the first single off the upcoming September 20th release of their album: Flood. I’m a fan of Hippo Campus, but when I hear about a Flood album – I have a favorite (“Birdhouse in Your Soul”) That’s an album from 1990 but it’s so good. Love you – They Might Be Giants // Japandroids released a new song called “Chicago” which is great. BUT – they also announced that this will be off their upcoming album called Fate & Alcohol due out on October 18th. Why the But? They also announced it’s their last album. // Childish Gambino also just released his final album as the Childish Gambino. It’s called Bando Stone and the New World. FYI – it’s also the soundtrack to Donald Glover’s movie that goes by the same name. // Did I tell you about Bryce Fox and “Drip”? (cut)

Thank you to Spotify, Rolling Stone, Apple Music, uDiscoverMusic, Pigeons & Planes, Pitchfork, Louder, Spill Magazine, Dan Deluca of the Philly Inquirer & I know there’s more.

Be sure to check out the playlist on Spotify. As I mentioned in the beginning, it’s a playlist of songs that I’ve talked about and thought about: so, you’ll see some new music there from Sports Team (full album arrives FEB 2025), Amy Allen (really enjoying her), Untraceable Records has a fun song – ehhh, let’s play a bit (clip), and anything that I really messed up and missed – well, that’s why I’ll be doing Missed Music Monday on Monday.

Happy Friday Eve! And – a Happy Birthday to “Machine Gun” Kelly

(clip)

Wrong one – I was referencing the actual gangster – George “Machine Gun” Kelly. He actually died a day before his 54th birthday. So close.

Since I played MGK though – remember his fiancee is or was Megan Fox

That song is NOT new. It’s from a Ben Rector album called – The Walking In Between

How old? From 2013 – I’m a huge fan which makes missing his recent single uncalled for.

(Missed Music Monday opener)

Ben Rector first released a self-titled extended play album back in 2006 – when he was in college!

Last Friday, he released his new song “Wreck” (clip)

It’s beautiful. I can’t let that happen AND I’m hoping he brings us more.

Nickelback on the charts again? and, what’s on Joey’s head?// new music friday: Eminem, Peck & Beck, Katy Perry

(“Without Me” – Eminem)

That song always makes me smile. Years ago, my brother-in-law Barry coached his little girl’s soccer team and during warm-ups, he had them sing the beginning of that song.

(“Without Me” – Eminem)

Probably not the most ideal song for them to sing, but apparently they belted it out

(“Without Me” – Eminem)

(Morning Babble Intro)

Hi. We made it. A full solid week after a holiday fun-filled work shortened week last week . . . is never fun. So, again – we made it. You know who else made it?

(“How You Remind Me”)

Nickelback reached number one on the recent week’s Hot Hard Rock Song’s chart for their song “How You Remind Me” which came out 23 years ago in 2001. Why? Well, Netflix released the band’s new documentary called “Nickelback: Hate to Love.” (clip) I haven’t seen it. I’ll be honest I was never all in on the band, but they don’t have bad music. (“Photograph”) That line always bothered me though – “And what the hell is on Joey’s head?” As for what that exactly is on Joey’s head, well apparently it was a champagne bucket. I’ll provide a link to the webiste explaining it all. For a quick peak at the image, I’ll have to play the beginning of the “Photograph” video (clip)

New Music Friday:

I put together a Spotify playlist of the songs that I talked about and thought about today for New Music Friday. Click here for that!

  • First up – Orville Peck – he has some interesting songs (clip) The song is called “Cowboys are Frequently Secretly Fond of Each Other” – it’s a duet with Willie Nelson. It’s included on his Stampede: Volume 1 album which came out this past May. It’s fun and very good. (clip) Today though, there’s another duet he’s performing on, but this time – it’s with Beck (clip) The song will appear on Peck’s Stampede: Volume 2 duets album which is fully released on August 2nd. Here’s the new song called “Death Valley High” (clip)
  • Katy Perry has a new song out (clip) (using inhaler) She’s so healthy. Play more – by the way, it’s called “Woman’s World” (clip) I’m just going to sit for a little bit. That single is set to appear on Katy’s upcoming album 143, which will be released on September 20th. Is it hot in here? (be right back)
  • (clip) The 12th studio album is out now from Eminem and it’s called The Death of Slim Shady. He’s angry. Sounds like he’s trying to get cancelled. (clip) I’m still listening to it – quietly. I have an 8-year-old. Over an hour of new music. The song being pushed on Spotify is “Somebody Save Me” which includes Jelly Roll (clip)
  • Several quick hits of new music: Mustafa has announced his debut studio album called Dunya (Dune-E-uh) is out on September 27th. One of the producers on the just released “SNL” song is Aaron Dessner. He’s from The National – I’m a fan.  // Welsh producer-songwriter – Kelly Lee Owens has a new song out called “Love You Got” – go listen to that dancing fun // We got a couple songs that were previously released but today we have new acoustic versions. One is from Awolnation and “Panoramic View” – the other is “Fortnight” with Post Malone and Taylor Swift

As I mentioned in the beginning, it’s a playlist of songs that I’ve talked about and thought about: so, you’ll see some new music there from Jagwar Twin and lovelytheband doing the song “Tomorrow”, Little Image, and Teddy Swims (“Funeral” song is good), and anything that I really messed up and missed – well, that’s why I’ll be doing Missed Music Monday on Monday.

“Summer Nights” clip

That’s the Red Rocker when he was with Van Halen

Happy Friday Eve on another hot summer day and night

The Rock and Roll life of Sammy Hagar was the newest biography special on @AETV

But – as I learned in one of my favorite books to read and listen to – RED. There is so much more to Sammy Hagar.

“Can’t Drive 55!”

Yes – he openly admits not being able to drive 55. BUT – Sammy is a trained professional chef. He even has a cookbook titled “Are We Having Any Fun Yet?”

(“The Place That Makes Me Happy” cut)

That’s a favorite song of mine from The Moss – they have newer song that I sorta misssed

(Missed Music Monday opener)

The Moss released “Alive” at the end of June

(“Alive” cut)

After listening on Spotify, it was followed up with a last Friday release from Jake Bugg called “All Kinds of People”

(“All Kind of People” kind)

That song domino’d into a new one from Kasabian which released a whole new album called Happenings on Friday. I missed The Moss, Jake Bugg, and Kasabian – I’ll keep listening and reporting though.

Watching Clerks again . . . with my son! / new music friday: Eminem, Lana Del Ray, Childish Gambino / Kevin Smith quote

DISCLAIMER:

(Clerks clip)

Well, I watched Clerks with my 15-year-old son. It was fun. Not sure if I did good parenting there, but it was defnitely fun.

(Clerks clip)

(Morning Babble intro)

Happy Weekend – I apologize ahead of time for the AC vent fan running. With today’s heat, there ain’t no stopping that AC today. I’ll just talk “really louder.” Also, I’m hoping every one was able to enjoy a long holiday weekend. Some people had to work though – like the people in the ER for all those firework shenanagins. (clip)

And that’s why I stay inside. That and air conditioning. Back to the Clerks movie from 1994 (clip) Yes – I fully believe that the movie is a theatrical masterpiece, but I’m not going to talk about that. Instead, movie soundtracks. I miss them (dance clip) The song in the background that Jay and Silent Bob are getting their groove on to is “Violent Mood Swings” from Stabbing Westward. (clip) The rest of the movie and soundtrack includes songs from Girls Against Boys, Bad Religion, and Alice in Chains (“Got Me Wrong” clip) Speaking of Alice in Chains – they were very much a part of another great soundtrack of alltime which just turned 32 this past June 30th. I’m talking about the movie Singles and it’s soundtrack which included all the rockers of that time: Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Mudhoney, Screaming Trees, Mother Love Bone and, yes, Alice in Chains (clip) I don’t have enough time for it, but Mallrats had a killer soundtrack too.

(Countdown Video)

New Music Friday:

I put together a Spotify playlist of the songs that I talked about and thought about today for New Music Friday. Click here for that!

  • Couple weeks ago – the Detroit rapper – Eminem released a new song from his upcoming album (“Houdini” clip) The song was called “Houdini.” He’s back again with another new song but this time, he’s joined by couple fellow Michiganders. Big Sean and BabyTron can be heard on the 2nd release of the new album which is called: The Death of Slim Shady and due out in its entirety next Friday (7/12). Here’s the song – “Tobey” (clip)
  • I’m a little out of the loop on this one, but I guess it’s been teased out for a couple weeks on social media about something going on between Quavo and Lana Del Rey. Both have remained shhhhh about the nature of their relationship, neither confirming nor denying the dating rumors. So, what did they just do? They released a new song together called “Tough” (clip) That’s very snuggly. Good crossover song with the hip-hop/country thing going on. Apparently, the song might be highlighted on the new country album from Lana Del Ray called: Lasso and could be coming out this September.
  • (“Little Foot Big Foot” clip) Last month, actually it’s now July, so two month’s ago Donald Glover aka Childish Gambino did a rerelease which he described as “the finished version of 3.15.20.” This time it was given the title – Atavista (“Atavista” clip) But now, he has released another new song, but this time off what Glover claims is the “final” Childish Gambino album, Bando Stone & the New World, is out July 19. This is “Lithonia” (clip)
  • Several quick hits of new music: If the sound of country is your taste in music, then you are in luck. Zach Bryan released over an hour of music spread out amongst 19 songs under the album title of: The Great American Bar Scene // Killer Mike is still killing it. Via the 2024 BET Awards, he won Album of the Year for Michael. A whole new single dropped called “Humble Me.” I won’t lie. I’m looking forward to the next Run the Jewels album, Mike // and finally I’m cheering this one on and I’ve always been a closet fan of Kesha (clip) Today, she has releasesd her first single as an independent artist called “Joyride” (clip)

As I mentioned in the beginning, it’s a playlist of songs that I’ve talked about and thought about: so, you’ll see some new music there from Sam Roberts Band, Huey Mack and the very prolific, Fuller (ready for the album) and anything that I really messed up and missed – well, that’s why I’ll be doing Missed Music Monday on Monday.

Borrowing words from someone else in an attempt to spread happiness everywhere or at the very least – a reasonable range. Hey – go click that video!

Some people would go to Bruce Springsteen and his “Born in the USA”. I chose Katy Perry’s “Firework” to kick-off my 4th of July playlist. (“I kissed a girl”) That song of hers was a close 2nd.

Happy 4th of July! Don’t lose any digits today . . . if you do, that’s one way to remembered amoungst your family member for years to come.

I went to one of the Founding Fathers for today’s quote which was brought to my attention again from this guy – Chase Jarvis, who is working on another book of his. Can’t wait for that one. But as he was working on it – he’s been using this Benjamin Franklin quote:
